5 Cozy Games for Beginners

Whether you’re brand new to gaming or just looking for something low-key to unwind with, cozy games are the perfect way to ease in. They’re like warm cups of tea for your brain- no timers, no pressure, just good vibes and wholesome fun. If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve got you. Here are five cozy games that are super beginner-friendly and guaranteed to melt your stress away.

1. Unpacking

Platform: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox
Genre: Puzzle, Zen, Narrative

It’s literally a game about unpacking moving boxes. Sounds mundane? It’s actually surprisingly emotional and peaceful. You go through a person’s life by unpacking their belongings from one home to the next, learning their story through the items they keep. This was my first game and I loved it so much. It can be finished in a single setting but it’s so fun with such a beautiful storyline.

Why it’s great for beginners:

  • No fail state
  • Intuitive drag-and-drop mechanics
  • Short play sessions (great for winding down before bed)

Bonus: It’s got that “organize your closet and feel powerful” energy.

2. Stardew Valley

Platform: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Mobile
Genre: Farming Sim, Life Sim

Imagine quitting your job and moving to the countryside to fix up your grandfather’s farm. That’s Stardew Valley in a nutshell. You can plant crops, raise animals, mine, fish, chat with cute townsfolk- and maybe even find love. No two days are the same and you set the pace. This does require a bit of a grind and maybe some Google for some quests but it’s oddly addictive.

Why it’s great for beginners:

  • Clear goals but zero pressure
  • Simple mechanics that grow with you
  • Encourages exploration without overwhelming you

Tip: Don’t worry if your farm looks chaotic at first- we’ve all been there.

3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Genre: Life Sim, Social Sim

You move to a deserted island with a bunch of cute animal neighbors and build your dream life. Catch bugs, decorate your home, plant flowers- it’s basically an adult coloring book, but interactive and adorable. It’s also incredibly soothing after a long day of work.

Why it’s great for beginners:

  • Friendly characters that make the world feel safe and sweet
  • No time limits or rules
  • Encourages creativity and routine

4. Cozy Grove

Platform: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Mobile
Genre: Life Sim, Story-Rich

You’re a Spirit Scout helping ghostly bears find peace on a haunted-but-friendly island. It’s like Animal Crossing meets a ghost story

Why it’s great for beginners:

  • Daily tasks are gentle and manageable
  • Gorgeous, hand-drawn art style
  • Encourages a little play every day (no risk of burnout or getting overwhelmed with tasks)

5. Disney Dreamlight Valley

Platform: PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox
Genre: Life Sim, Adventure

You move into a magical village where Disney and Pixar characters live, and help restore the town to its former glory. Expect gardening, cooking, and lots of quality time with Mickey.

Why it’s great for beginners:

  • Combines quests with customisation and story
  • Kid-friendly, but surprisingly deep (I credit this game with fixing my 2023 burnout)
  • Familiar characters = instant comfort

Gaming doesn’t have to mean loud explosions or lightning-fast reflexes. Cozy games are about slowing down, savoring the moment, and doing things just for the joy of it. They’re perfect for beginners, and honestly? With everything going on in the world right now, we should all escape to a cozy little virtual world. Are you a cozy gamer? Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Your First Nintendo Switch

I am utterly obsessed with my Nintendo Switch. I have no idea what I did with my life before I had this console (I was probably far more productive though). Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or just looking for a new way to unwind, the Nintendo Switch is a versatile device that packs a big punch. But before you dive in, let’s break down everything you need to know about the Nintendo Switch:

Which Switch is Which?

The Nintendo Switch actually comes in 3 different versions. While it’s marketed as “there’s a switch for everyone”, I personally believe that you should have atleast TWO devices (Did I mention that I was obsessed? I was not kidding). But here’s the differences between each Switch:

  • Nintendo Switch Standard: This is the OG Switch. It’s got the full hybrid experience: dock it for TV play, or undock it and play on the go. Perfect if you like variety and flexibility in how you game. It’s cheaper than the OLED but more expensive than the Switch Lite. The battery life does last longer here than the Switch Lite.

  • Nintendo Switch Lite: The Lite is handheld only, which means no TV play. It’s also smaller, lighter, and comes in a range of cute colors. Great for those of us who are always on the move or just want something more compact. The battery life isn’t too great here which is why I kinda wish I had just gone for a regular Switch.

  • Nintendo Switch OLED: This is the newest addition to the family. Think of it as the standard Switch, but with a bigger, brighter OLED screen, enhanced audio, and a wider adjustable stand. If you’re all about that vibrant display and immersive experience, this one’s for you. If you compare the Nintendo Switch OLED side by side to the Nintendo Switch, the difference is clear. However the OLED feels a bit uncomfortable to me which is why I settled for the Switch Lite’s smaller size.

Personally I feel like the OLED would be great for a TV screen and the Switch Lite is great for handheld play.

What Games Do You Want to Play?

Your choice of device might also depend on the type of games you’re itching to play.

If you’re more into local multiplayer games (think “Mario Kart” with friends) or prefer high-intensity single-player adventures, the standard or OLED models will give you the best of both worlds. But if you’re just looking to cosy up in bed with some casual gaming, the Lite could be a match made in heaven.

Accessories – What’s Worth It?

You can’t just buy a Nintendo Switch on it’s own. This is something that bugged me but R5k was a console was alot and there was alot of other accessories that I needed to go with it. So what do you actually NEED with a Nintendo Switch?

Screen Protector: 100% yes. A small investment to keep your screen scratch-free.

Carrying Case: If you plan on taking it out of the house, get one. I bought one initially and now I have no clue where it is.

Extra Joy-Cons or Pro Controller: The Joy-Cons that come with the Switch are fine, but a Pro Controller is a game-changer, especially for longer gaming sessions.

Memory Card: The internal storage fills up fast, especially if you’re a digital download kind of person. Grab a microSD card with at least 128GB.

Is it Worth the Hype?

Look…I might be biased but I believe it is definitely worth it! The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a gaming console that offers flexibility, portability, and a great library of games. It’s got something for everyone – whether you’re into deep RPGs, quick indie games, or just want to beat your friends in “Super Smash Bros.”

The Nintendo Switch gaming community is also super-supportive which doesn’t hurt things either.

Now that you have an idea of what options are out there, you can go pick the console that’s best for you and let the gaming adventures begin.

5 Hobbies that Heal My Inner Child

I saw something online that said as an adult you’re responsible for taking care of both the adult version of yourself and the child version. I absolutely agree. Childhood trauma tends to have lasting impact and as an adult, it then falls to you to heal it.

Here are 5 very random hobbies that I indulge in to heal my inner child.

1. Visiting the toy store

This was a result of the Barbie movie. I visited a toy store and realised that as an adult, I could buy anything I wanted. Sure most of the things I didn’t buy because the prices were ridiculous. But it felt kinda empowering to be walking around a toy store with my overpriced iced coffee knowing that I could buy myself anything I wanted. Except for those R1 000 dolls. I could never.

2. Going out for ice cream

Something about ice cream makes me so happy. It’s something so small and so simple but it brings me so much joy. My favourite ice cream spot is near the beach so I can buy a cone and watch the ocean. What could be better?

3. Playing videogames

This is something that I very recently discovered I enjoy. I bought myself a Nintendo Switch last year and it’s one of my favourite tech items. It’s so fun to disconnect from work with a cute little no pressure game.

4. Colouring

I’ve always loved colouring and it’s always been my way to destress from work. However I recently found a pack of markers from Typo and it’s upped the fun so much more. I can’t explain it. Get some markers and a colouring book (make sure the colour won’t seep through the pages) and try it out yourself.

5. Going to the movies

Another classic for me but I recently fell back into this habit because of my former workplace giving movie tickets whenever we donated blood. (I still think that’s how I got anemic but anyway, I loved the idea of “free movies”). Going to the movies was a big deal for me as a kid and even as an adult, the movies evoke the same excitement in me.

What are some hobbies that heal YOUR inner child? I’d love to know below.
