The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
“The Hunger Games” is a dystopian novel set in the the Panem, a Capitol surrounded by twelve (very poor districts).
Due to a past war, the Capitol hosts the Hunger Games each year to show the districts exactly how mighty they are.
The Hunger Game is a battle to the death for one boy and one girl from each district.
When Katniss volunteers to take her sister’s place in the Hunger Games, she is paired with Peeta, the baker’s son.
Peeta once provided Katniss with bread when she was starving. It’s an act of kindness she has never forgotten and not one that she is comfortable with. Because if she is to win the Hunger Games, she has to kill Peeta.
It isn’t long before Katniss and Peeta become fan favourites and are forced to choose between their humanity or winning the games.
I watched “The Hunger Games” when it first came out and I was not really impressed. So I don’t know what made me pick up this book but I was glued from the very first second.
If you haven’t read “The Hunger Games” as yet, definitely pick it up. You will not regret it.

I HAVE A WRITING JOB
There are no words to sufficiently describe my joy at this moment!
I FINALLY have a writing job. It’s unpaid but it’s remote and for a brand I strongly believe in. I have actually been trying to get this job for eight years so I am so excited to finally have the title of writer for this publication.
I don’t want to say any more because I am so scared I’ll jinx it but I just had to share!
After ten years of writing experience, two internships and six years of trying to get a writing job, I am super-thrilled for this next chapter.
Fiction Friday: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the timeless tale of Alice and follows her in the crazy world of Wonderland and the Looking-Glass.
“Alice in Wonderland” is one of my all-time favourite books and the older I get, the more often I start to quote this book. (My current favorite is “I am not crazy, my reality is just different from yours”). Also, I feel like the White Rabbit is my spirit animal since he and I are always running late.
This edition is full of great illustrations and interactive elements such as a map of the Looking Glass World and the rabbit’s house with Alice trapped in it.
While I have always enjoyed reading “Alice in Wonderland”, my own copy is a tattered black and white from childhood so it was a great delight to reread this edition.
My only regret is not having a little one to share this book with (but at the same time I’m too terrified to share this with my little cousins in case they damage it).
This is a great collector’s edition that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys “Alice in Wonderland”.

Fiction Friday: Book Review- The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook
The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Skye uses her psychic powers to “read” people’s futures. It’s her side hustle. Her trick is simply telling people what they want to know.
By simply reading their reactions, facial expressions and their appearance, Skye can judge pretty accurately what people want her to tell them.
But when Paige, the most popular girl at school goes missing, Skye offers to work with the police to find her.
It isn’t difficult. Skye knows exactly what happened to Paige and where she is. But it isn’t long before things take a twisted turn.
Skye can either tell the truth, save Paige and ruin her own name. Or hope that whoever has Paige comes clean and lets her go…soon.
This book was well-written and thrilling. I couldn’t put it down.
I loved how easily Skye could read people and I loved the ending. I didn’t know who to trust or what was going on. This was an amazing rollercoaster ride of plot twists and turns.
If you’re looking for a mystery, definitely give this a try.

Recommended Reads: Tear- Jerkers
Every so often, you need a book that is going to make you bawl like a baby. Well, that’s what some people say. Me, personally, I don’t get it. I like happy books with happy endings. But sometimes there are books that leave me bawling and for some twisted reason, I adore them regardless. Here are some of my all-time favourite tear-jerkers:
1.Rainfall by Melissa Delport– “Rainfall” tells the story of Paige and Adam. The two fall deeply in love and are happy. Until the day Paige comes home to find Adam in bed with someone else. Worse still, Adam has no remorse for his actions. Paige wants nothing more to do with him until someone from his past visits her and shares a secret about Adam. This book tore me up so badly I have never read anything by Melissa Delport afterwards (not for lack of trying, I just…I can’t). I cried for three days after reading this book and while I personally hated it, it has countless fans so I’m listing it here regardless. Hey, maybe those people are more mentally stable than I am.
2.Me Before You by Jojo Moyes– “Me Before You” follows Louisa Clark as she takes a job as a caretaker for Will Traynor. Will is paralyzed from an accident and wants nothing more than to be dead- something he sees as a great relief. But the more time they spend together, the stronger the attachment between the two grows. Like “Rainfall”, this book had me depressed for days and it’s hard not to admire the power of words as you weep non-stop.
3. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover– Pretty much any Colleen Hoover book is guaranteed to make you cry but this one is one of the best. Lily is dating Ryle, a gorgeous neurosurgeon who is against relationships but somehow falls madly in love with her. But as their relationship takes a dark turn, Lily runs into Atlas, an old high school boyfriend. Atlas is the total opposite of Ryle and it isn’t long before Lily starts questioning who she is supposed to be with.
4. F*ck Love by Tarryn Fisher– Helena is in love with Kit. They’re perfect together. Except for the fact that he’s dating her best friend. This book was an emotional roller-coaster that I enjoyed immensely. Tarryn has a gift for writing twisted characters that you cannot help but love.

Welcome to the Real World: 1) The Girl Who Made Dreams Come True
Sometime in late 2016, I was lucky enough to get an interview with a local newspaper. Granted, I only found out about the opportunity through my uncle who was a radio journalist but I was thrilled to have my foot in the door.
Walking into the building I had always dreamed of working at, I felt like things were finally coming together. 7 years of hard work were finally paying off.
At this point, I would like draw attention to the fact that I was still technically a college student. I was finishing up my final semester which was delayed by UKZN protest action. But I was tired of waiting for a job in my field (it’s been two years and I’m still waiting so yes the irony is not lost on me).
My interview went great and I was given a position to write for the cultural/lifestyle section of the newspaper. I instantly secured an interview with an author I knew. I conducted the interview, wrote my article and submitted it the day before deadline.
Three days later, I had the pleasure of seeing my writing in print. Above the fold.
I was overjoyed. And then came the payment. Or lack thereof. Here’s the thing though, I was more than willing to work for free. But apparently freelancers take a while to pay.
The next few months were brutal. I chased down the Payroll lady weekly for updates on my payments, completed university and started interviewing for regular 9-5 jobs. I was ghosted by my editor. No calls went through. Neither did my emails or SMS’es. And this was not for payment. No this was for my pitches. Radio silence.
My payment finally came through 4 months later in February 2017. I still tried (albeit unsuccessfully) to get interviewees but it was kind of hard when I didn’t know if I was even still a freelancer (SPOILER ALERT: I still was. I received a letter a year later confirming that they were releasing me from my contract as they no longer required my services. My co-workers and I laughed non-stop at the idea that I had been dismissed from a job I didn’t even know I had).
That was how my short-lived journalism career ended, leaving me with two very important lessons. 1) I didn’t want to be a freelancer and 2) I needed some sort of support structure in a working environment.
For a first job and especially for a first freelancing gig, this experience was absolutely awful and I would not like to go back. Though I supposed if I went back now, things would be different.
For one thing, I am no longer the same quiet girl. If I had been ignored for pitches now, I would probably get in my car and drive straight to the editor’s office to query if I could get started or not.
What I didn’t know at the time was that these experiences were going to shape and define me and help with a very important life choice that was coming up.
Welcome to the Real World
So I’ve had this idea in my head for a while now but just never got around to sharing it. I feel like it is REALLY important for me to share my horror stories, making the transition from college graduate to responsible working adult. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t fun but it was almost always hilarious looking back.
Also there are tons of things I wish I had known but just didn’t. So to save you from making my mistakes, I’m starting this mini-series following me from my ambitions of being a journalist to finally settling down in a career.
I hope you enjoy! Or at the very least, feel free to share some horror stories of your own.
Fiction Friday: Picture Perfect (Geek Girl #3) by Holly Smale
Picture Perfect by Holly Smale
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In “Picture Perfect”, the Manners take New York. Harriet and her family have to move when her dad gets a new job. The family is uprooted to a tiny suburb in the middle of nowhere (but still close to New York so yay? I don’t know. I was as disappointed as Harriet that they were not in actual NYC).
Harriet is about to try again at being a model and honestly I don’t really care. I’m just here for Nick. Who is busy on the other side of the world being a model.
I loved Harriet, her wonky family and Wilbur and they made this book for me.
Personally I just wanted to see Nick and Harriet together because I feel like we haven’t seen enough of their relationship in the present but that didn’t happen.
All the same, I loved seeing New York through Harriet’s eyes. This was a great read that had me laughing throughout
###SPOILER ALERT (and at one point) crying too ###END SPOILER ALERT
